The progress of the energy sector doesn’t solely depend on feats of engineering or supply chain management. There is also the question of how to better explain the energy industry’s challenges and achievements to the general public—and how policy can be shaped to foster those achievements. This is where Jennifer Winter, the area director of energy and environmental policy at the School of Public Policy, University of Calgary, has thrived. Winter has established herself as one of the leading researchers and thinkers that follows the sector, and has published papers on a range of topics including oil transportation, energy literacy, the environmental impacts of resource development and labor issues. Her style is refreshingly reasonable in an industry often clouded by hyperbole. She has written for various high-profile publications on these subjects and more, and regularly takes part in panel discussions at energy events.
