Finance Manager, Painted Pony
Painted Pony Petroleum
Education: Chartered Accountant, CA School of Business; Master of Professional Accounting, University of Saskatchewan; Bachelor of Commerce, University of Calgary
Christie Ward’s journey from academia to financial management isn’t all that unusual in Calgary. But it’s perhaps the diversions along the way that have set her career apart. From her travels through South America and Africa, to her work supporting the Branch Out Neurological Foundation, Ward has led a rounded existence inside the office and out. After graduating with a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Calgary in 2007, Ward spent a summer traveling before earning a Master of Professional Accounting degree, articling with KPMG in the junior energy sector, and eventually earning her Chartered Accountant designation in 2011. With her CA credentials in hand, Ward left KPMG to take on a new role with Painted Pony Petroleum, broadening her horizons beyond accounting and financial reporting, and building key relationships both within the company and without. That’s where she is today as finance manager: In a role that she says keeps her in constant contact with Painted Pony’s executives and engineers, as well as outside bankers, insurers and commodity traders. For anyone trying to get a real handle on how financing in the energy business works, there’s hardly a better place to be.
