There is a lot of talk about moving away from coal as an energy source, but the switch is easier said than done for most industries. Below is a chart with the latest data on how much energy use can be switched from coal in major industries, as presented in the 2006 Manufacturing Energy Consumption Survey done by the Energy Information Administration in the U.S.

The federal government is planning to introduce tough climate change legislation before this December’s climate change conference in Copenhagen, which includes phasing out of coal as an electricity source. This would affect some provinces in Canada disproportionately to others because of current differences in fuel mixes.
