Venture Publishing Acquires Alberta Oil Magazine

Edmonton, Alberta (June 3rd 2008) - Venture Publishing, the award-winning publisher of Alberta Venture and Unlimited magazines, has completed the purchase of Alberta Oil, a Calgary-based oil and gas trade publication. Alberta Oil was launched by Skinnyfish Media in December 2004 and in the past three and a half years has become a valued source of in-depth information on the issues of the energy industry for an international audience. Under Venture's ownership, the magazine will build upon that record to expand its editorial breadth, its frequency and its reach.

"Alberta Oil is a great fit for Venture," says Venture president and publisher Ruth Kelly. "It complements our existing roster of business publications and will allow us to drill deeper on this vital sector of Alberta's economy. We look forward to bringing our expertise to this already strong magazine and to increasing its value to its 60,000 influential business readers."

Venture is pleased to announce that respected energy writer and editor Gordon Jaremko has been appointed the new editor of Alberta Oil. Gordon's experience includes 25 years at the Calgary Herald, four years at the Edmonton Journal and seven years as the editor of Oilweek magazine. He is a frequent speaker on the issues of the energy sector to both industry and the general public and has co-authored two books on the topic. Gordon will be leading Alberta Oil out of Venture's Calgary office.

Other immediate changes will include an increase in frequency for the magazine from its current quarterly release to a six issue per year schedule, beginning with an October/November 2008 issue. Alberta Oil's circulation strategy will be helmed by Venture's director of circulation, Deidre Van Norman, who came to Venture Publishing from Houston, Texas where she managed the circulation and internet development of PennWell's Oil and Gas Journal. A redesign of the magazine will also be completed, under the direction of Venture's creative director, Malcolm Brown.

"This is the right choice for Alberta Oil at this juncture," says Michael Dodd, president of Skinnyfish. "We know this will benefit both readers and advertisers and we are looking forward to watching Venture take the magazine to the next level."

The first issue of Alberta Oil under Venture's ownership will be released at the 2008 Oil Sands Conference in Edmonton in late September.
