Canada’s North puts a chill on renewable energy
Oil, propane and diesel fuel the northern lifestyle
The North is different – or so we are told by northerners. It turns out that’s true when it comes to energy use. Almost three quarters of northern fuel consumption is a by-product of refined oil, well above the national average of 40 per cent. A large percentage of that fuel – almost all of it imported from southern provinces – is oil or propane used for heating and diesel fuel used for transportation and electricity generation. Energy costs are a major reason why living in Canada’s North is pricier than in the rest of Canada. And with oil prices over US$100, northerners’ wallets will likely get even lighter thanks to their heavy use of refined oil products.
