A technology-based approach to emissions reductions currently promoted by Alberta is also a large part of the International Energy Agency’s proposed climate change measures. However, CCS is not cheap and the burden of its implementation is set to be borne mainly by OECD countries. In two scenarios, one where the IEA looks at ways to reduce emissions to current levels by 2050 and the other, where it looks to reduce emissions to 50 per cent of current levels, CCS is projected to provide between 14 and 19 per cent of those reductions. The following charts show who would bear the burden and would will pay the cost.
