In recent months, the oil sands have been under considerable scrutiny by environmental groups and policy-makers from around the world. The latest in media attention to focus on the Athabasca region and its main industry was an article in the National Geographic that was decried by many Albertans and evoked a response from the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP). However, despite assertions by critics to the contrary, local industry and environmental groups are putting in a considerable effort to ensure the environmental health of the Wood Buffalo region. In this audio slide show, Glen Semenchuk, the executive director of CEMA talks about his stakeholder group’s environmental monitoring and management efforts in the area.
